How Much Does it Cost to Remodel Your Bathroom?

Bathrooms are one of the most essential pieces to the aesthetic of a home. A bathroom can make or break how you, a guest, or a potential buyer will see your house – so if you’re looking to update or renovate anything from the powder room to the master bath, you’re going to want to know how much to pay for it.

In 2021, the average cost to remodel a bathroom is $10,350 CAD to $11,500 CAD. Most homeowners will pay somewhere between $5,750 CAD and $23,000 CAD. This guide will be an overview of each cost you will be looking at depending on the needs and wants of your specific bathroom.

Types of Bathrooms

The kind of bathroom you want to renovate is going to have a lot to do with how much you pay. The smaller the room and the more functional/less appliances there are, the less you will have to pay. Conversely, if you want a jacuzzi tub and triple sinks with a two-headed shower for your master bathroom, you have to be prepared to pay for it!

Below you will find the average costs for renovating the most common types of bathrooms:

  • Powder room (sink/toilet): $2,109 CAD
  • Guest bathroom (close to full or full): $225 CAD per square foot.
  • Kids bathroom (full and functional): The price of a full bathroom plus additional bathtub and/or shower, potentially multiple sinks, etc.
  • Master bathroom (Major point of interest for selling; full, sometimes luxury): $376 CAD per square foot, give or take the price of your customized preferences!

Depending on exactly what you are looking to redo, even these costs can fluctuate a little. Read on for more information on what makes the price variable!

Labor Costs and Materials

One of the main price differentials between a half bath and, say, a master suite bathroom that is bigger than the attic will be labor costs. The square footage of your bathroom, plus the removal and replacement of tubs, showers, tile, vanities, or anything else will all contribute towards labor costs. Quality laborers can be anywhere from $75 CAD to $165 CAD per hour.

When looking to replace elements of your bathroom, the following shows the average costs if you use most materials found in basic home improvement stores.

  • Toilet: $150 CAD – $753 CAD
  • Bathtub: $604 CAD – $1,506 CAD
  • Sink: $115 CAD – $288 CAD
  • Shower: $527 CAD – $677 CAD
  • Flooring: $90 CAD – $196 CAD
  • Lighting: $75 CAD – $181 CAD
  • Counters: $151 CAD – $1,506 CAD

If you want to use a luxury material, plan to pay 2-3 times as much as these prices.

Specific Variables

Do you want a bathtub and a shower? What about just one, but also a sink? Do you want to retile the shower and floor, or just the shower? All of these questions will play a part in your pricing, so take a look at some of the specifics you might want to consider for your renovation!

Shower

remodel your bathroom

If your household is made up of adults and the budget is a little more tight, you could consider having only a shower and nixing the addition of a bathtub!

If you are planning to live in your house for a while longer, any personal preferences should be taken into account. But if you are trying to sell, it may be best to renovate your bathroom with a quality shower that raises the value of your home but doesn’t negate the ability of the new homeowner to improve upon your remodeling according to their tastes.

A shower installation can be between $1,808 CAD and $3,014 CAD. Additionally, cheap shower heads can cost around $22 CAD, while a fancy one can be upwards of $900 CAD! Plan for what your lifestyle requires.

Bathtub

remodel your bathroom

A family with small kids will almost certainly want a bathtub, but anyone who wants a relaxing dip in the warm water may also be interested in adding or replacing one. Size will always be a variable for pricing – a simple bathtub will be much less than a high-end jacuzzi.

Installation of a bathtub can be anywhere from $1,114 CAD to $2,109 CAD.

Toilets and Sinks

The cost to replace a toilet will be both the cost of the piece itself (provided by you to the workmen) and the price of installation.

A toilet is between $150 CAD and $300 CAD to buy, and installing it is anywhere from $300 CAD to $603 CAD.

For sinks, installation cost is $452 CAD – $753 CAD. Additional costs will depend on the materials you choose for your faucet and basin.

Towel Racks and Cabinets

Don’t forget these accent pieces! They can add all the style in the world to your bathroom, or detract from it. Pricing depends on where you purchase the pieces, but they are fairly easy to install yourself.

Feel free to talk to a specialist if you aren’t sure which pieces would go best with your new bathroom!

Tiling and Flooring

Tiling for a shower and floor will make all the difference in the look and feel of your bathroom. Bright color pops or one color, large slates or tiny mosaics, there are so many variations to explore! Keep in mind that for your shower floor, tiles need to be six inches or less due to sloping towards the drain and slip resistance.

For materials, think about maintenance as well as aesthetic. Rarer materials might be nice to brag about, but ceramic is nothing to sneeze at when you can just put it in and leave it there, easy to clean.

Ceramic is also one of the cheapest materials out there, while porcelain and linoleum are only slightly more expensive. Even marble or granite are good options, though pricier.

Certain materials also need the help of a professional to install, which is an additional cost. You may also need to pay for the removal of your original flooring. Professional tiling is around $1,055 CAD – $1,205 CAD.

The Cost to Your House

Remember that to add a new fixture, whether that’s lighting or a shower or anything else that belongs in a bathroom, you have to consider how that will affect your plumbing, electricity, structure, ventilation, etc.

Licensed professionals need to be brought in when you are paying for anything that requires a change to those things, which will increase cost. They have to make sure that your changes are legal and safe. If you have a basement or crawl space, this can be made easier but still requires their help.
